Train Trip Along the Rhine
For this trip, we took the scenic route along the Rhine river after reading this post by the Man in Seat 61. The route was beautiful as advertised and was also a bonus for Angelina as this is the part of Germany she grew up in her childhood.
Overall Feeling and Getting Around
Köln was straightforward to navigate as most of the significant sites are in the vicinity of the train station. Food options were plentiful for meals and snacks. There was a lot of activity on the day we visited as the local club played their last home match. Köln is very LGBTQ+ friendly, so the city scene was quite relaxed and inviting for us.
Sites We Visited
Kölner Dom
After our wonderful lunch at the Gaffel am Dom, our first site was the Kölner Dom (Cologne Cathedral). You really can’t get by without seeing it as it is right next to the train station and is a massive structure. The inside was a marvelous sight, and hearing the pipe organs was a nice bonus as their sound was complete and would put any Dolby surround sound system to shame.
River Walk
Next, we took a stroll through town and along the river, just taking in the scene. We stopped by Läderach, a Swiss chocolate shop, and picked up some tasty morsels. Since it was a lovely bright and sunny day, we enjoyed a nice breeze along the river and even stopped by the historic mustard museum. We picked up a jar of their delicious honey mustard. It pairs well with a German potato salad recipe.
Lindt Chocolate Museum
Our final site was a visit to the Lindt Chocolate Museum. Overall, it was an excellent museum, and it was interesting to see the chocolate-making process. The samples they gave us in front of the fountain were good, and coupled with the other chocolate we ate earlier, we were completely satiated.
